IF: Twist (Biggest Painting so far)

This is a 48 X 60 inches acrylic on canvas that I completed recently. I am submitting this for Illustration Friday (topic of the week is Twist). I saw a beautiful village well in Tamil Nadu, India and was fascinated by the twists and turns I could incorporate in the painting were I to base the work on the well.

Also, I wrote a poem on this well:

The Village Well with its concentric steps
Just enough to put one foot down
Jutting out inches from the brick wall
that is green -
and red as the dragonfly
that darts about the banyan
that already has a prop root or two
As it grows on the moss-green wall
of the village well.

You will see that the poem is just about the immediate visual effect that the well had on me. There is more to the painting than meets the eye - I look forward to seeing your interpretation.

I shall also write about the experience of working on this 4 feet by 5 feet canvas shortly.

machi, its come out very well da. looks really like the well. i appreciate u, especially for the depth effect u could achieve. however, the steps doesn't look like real, n the steps are the ones which is affecting the overall painting.

Wow, great. The walls and the water look really very real. How do you get that rippling/reflecting effect of water? As roopesh said the steps look a little out of place...the reason may be that whr the is moss on the wall of the well, the steps don't seem to have any moss at all.

Hi Arvind awesome work as usual. However I agree with the first two comments...something about the steps is slightly off...I love the color composition...especially the moss and the way the color changes with the light/ depth of the well...the detail of the bricks is very cool too...Would love to see it for real...4 ft by 5 ft huh? Thats a mammoth work. Kudos.

Lovely painting, great use of color. I especially love the water. I see what is bothering everyone about the steps. Though you have done the steps as diminishing in size, they are all still proper rectangles. Thats why it looks out of place. To me it looks like a wire with some flags hanging, not like steps. Maybe a little more shading in the steps could give a better sense of depth.

Gorgeous work overall, that too in such a size!

This painting does draw you in, there's something almost hypnotic about it. Amazing scale, I tend to work rather small and I am always impressed by large pieces! Great colors too.

thanks for the comments. I really like the perspective of this painting.

Wonderful painting!

I think that what is bothering people about the steps is that they are not inset into the brick wall; instead they are floating by it. If one looks at this as a realistic depiction, that is bothersome. But I tend to look at paintings more abstractly - and in the abstract view, those steps are just right. They really make the composition.
